Russian hackers broke into and repeatedly gained access to the mailbox of British ex-trade Minister Liam Fox. It was from there that secret documents about the us-British trade agreement disclosed before the election of the British Prime Minister were stolen, Reuters found. In 2019, the publication of classified agreements was called a "Russian" way to prevent the election of the current Prime Minister, Boris Johnson.

According to Reuters, hackers accessed the account of the former trade Minister several times between July 12 and October 21, 2019. Sources do not say which group or organization the hackers belonged to, but there are clear indications that the hacks had signs of state support. Among the stolen information were six tranches of documents detailing British trade negotiations with the US.

The stolen documents were then published online, and the opposition labour party used them during the election campaign, claiming that the fate of the National health system (NHS) was under threat, according to the BBC Russian service. The British government said that Russia almost certainly tried to influence the outcome of the 2019 parliamentary elections with these documents, distributing them through a campaign dubbed Secondary Infektion in the British press.

A British government spokeswoman declined to comment on the Reuters investigation, citing an ongoing criminal investigation. He also added that the UK government now has "very reliable systems in place to protect the it systems of officials." According to the publication, the hacking of Fox's account and the subsequent leak of secret documents in the run-up to last year's election is an example of the most overt attempts by Russia to interfere in British politics.

According to the Guardian, a translation of the article cited by InoPressa, the most likely structure behind the cyber RAID is the GRU military unit 26165, involved in hacking the servers of the Democratic party of Hillary Clinton in 2016.

"The GRU's favorite method of hacking is crude, but effective. It involves sending phishing emails to the targets of the operation. The emails look like they came from a reliable source. They usually ask the recipient to click on a link or change their password. Those who fall for the trick, in fact, pass their mailboxes to shadowy Russian agents. It is suspected that Fox did just that, using either his personal or official email, " writes the publication's author, Luke Harding. According to him, similar emails may be sent to other Cabinet Ministers, as well as their employees and personal offices, as Moscow continues to view the UK as one of the main cyber targets.

In July, British foreign Secretary Dominic Raab directly accused Russia of trying to influence the country's parliamentary elections. At the same time, a parliamentary report was published, according to which Moscow tried to influence the referendum on Scottish independence in 2014 and the 2016 brexit vote.

The published documents on the trade agreement caused a major scandal: the opposition tried to present them as a government plot to give preferential access to American companies in the food market and purchases of the British National health service. As a result, the labour leader, Jeremy Corbyn, has not been able to explain where the documents came from, or why he believes they are authentic.
