Leaked details of trade talks between the UK and the US, distributed in the run-up to the United Kingdom's parliamentary elections in December 2019, occurred after hackers broke into the email of then-United Kingdom trade Minister Liam Fox, Reuters reported on Monday, citing two anonymous sources close to the investigation.

They did not specify which organization or company carried out the hack, but expressed confidence that a certain state was behind the attack. A government spokesman did not comment on the Agency's sources ' information in response to a request from Reuters, citing the ongoing investigation.

Recall that confidential documents about trade negotiations with the United States appeared on the Internet in the run-up to the 2019 election. According to Agency sources, hackers logged into Fox's account several times between July 12 and October 21 last year.

Among the stolen information were six packages of documents detailing trade negotiations between the UK and the US. Reuters could not determine which of Fox's accounts was hacked or when it first happened. Liam Fox resigned as trade Minister on July 24, 2019, and remains a member of Parliament. The official representative of Fox has repeatedly declined to comment.

In July 2020, British foreign Minister Dominic Raab said that the United Kingdom government believes that "Russian forces attempted to interfere" in last year's British parliamentary elections by distributing "illegally obtained" government documents. He said that Russian forces tried to interfere in the 2019 General election by distributing online illegally obtained and leaked government documents revealing details of a new trade deal between the US and the UK.

However, Raab added that there were no signs of a "large-scale campaign" to interfere in British democratic processes.

Also in July, the UK's national cyber security center published a document accusing Russia, with numerous reservations, of trying to steal information about the development of a coronavirus vaccine in the UK, Canada and the US. This, as established by the special services of the three countries mentioned, was allegedly done by the APT29 group, which "almost certainly is part of the Russian intelligence services".

Russia's Ambassador to the UK, Andrey Kelin, responded to these accusations by saying that Moscow does not engage in "any kind of interference" and sees no point in doing so. He called the claims of the Kingdom's special services about Moscow's alleged attempts to steal data on the development of vaccines for the new coronavirus nonsense.
