Honorary king of Spain Juan Carlos I, who abdicated in 2014, decided to leave the country to protect king Philip VI from the scandals that have plagued him recently, and to give him the opportunity to "reign calmly, responsibly and without unnecessary problems," Inte**x reports. The former monarch officially informed king Philip VI of his decision.

The text of the former king's letter to his son was published on the website of the Royal family. The message from the Royal Chancery does not specify which country and when Juan Carlos will leave. He called the decision voluntary, while Philip VI approved the decision, expressing his father's sincere respect and gratitude for such a step.

El Mundo news** reported that the former king has already left the country.

The departure of Juan Carlos I comes amid anti-corruption investigations against him at home and in Switzerland.

According to the Associated Press (AP), earlier this year, the Spanish Supreme court launched an investigation into the former monarch. The former king was suspected of receiving about 76 million euros (according to other sources, $ 100 million) from the late king Abdullah of Saudi Arabia in 2008. The money was transferred to a" supposed account " of Juan Carlos I, opened in the name of the Panamanian Foundation in Switzerland.

The Prosecutor's office is investigating whether these payments are related to a contract for the construction of a high-speed railway between Mecca and Medina, which in 2011 went to Spanish companies.

The Spanish Royal Palace has officially denied suggestions that the current king knew anything about the alleged financial fraud. Philip VI had previously refused to inherit his father's fortune, and also canceled the stipend due to the former monarch (about 228 thousand dollars a year). In the spring of 2020, the Swiss Prosecutor's office launched an investigation into 65 million euros that the former monarch gave to his girlfriend Corinne Sayn-Wittgenstein.

Juan Carlos I of the Bourbon dynasty was king for 39 years, taking the throne after the death of Spanish dictator Francisco Franco in 1975. In 2014, at the age of 76, he abdicated in favor of his son Philip.
