A powerful explosion occurred near the port in Beirut, RIA Novosti reports. The explosion was preceded by a small pop, five minutes later there was black and white smoke. After a powerful explosion, a column of red smoke rose into the sky.

The cause of the accident has not yet been determined. Unofficially, two versions are voiced - an Israeli strike on a warehouse with weapons and an explosion in a pyrotechnic warehouse. Emergency services are working at the scene of the accident. Dozens of victims are reported to be taken to hospitals in the city.

In nearby homes, as well as in buildings located a few kilometers from the epicenter, the blast broke the glass, says NEWSru.com Israel.

At least 50 people were killed, the Lebanese authorities said. At the same time, many media outlets note that the number of victims is likely to increase. According to al-Jazeera, hundreds of people were injured in the tragic accident.

The head of the Lebanese red cross said that thousands of people were taken to hospitals, while many could not receive medical care because they were trapped in their own homes and apartments.

In particular, the Hotel Dieu hospital reported that they received treatment for 500 injured residents. The hospital can't accept more patients yet. Sky News notes that in some cases, hospitals ' intensive care units are overcrowded.

Later it became known that there were only two explosions with an interval of 15 minutes. The first occurred in the port, the second inside the city.

According to him, Russian diplomats are "engaged in clarifying the fate of Russians" who could potentially be in the area of the explosions. "As of now, we have no information about the dead and injured Russians," Lebedev said.

One of the victims of Tuesday's explosion in Beirut was the General Secretary of the Lebanese Kataib party, Nizar Najarian.
