The authorities of the Western region of Turkmenistan - the Balkan velayat-sprayed antiseptic from the plane on the city of Turkmenbashi. This is reported by the regional service of radio Liberty-radio Azatlyk. The editorial links this to a new type of coronavirus pandemic.

According to the correspondent of "Azatlyk", antiseptics were sprayed during the Muslim holiday of Eid al-Adha (celebrated in late July - early August). For three days, residents were banned from leaving their homes. "They said it was not chlorine, but many felt bad," the correspondent added.

Money for disinfection in the amount of 100 manats per person (28.5 dollars) was collected from officials, state employees (teachers, doctors), oil workers, power engineers and the military. More than 70 thousand people live in Turkmenbashi. This city is the center of the country's oil refining industry.

The Turkmen authorities claim that there is not a single person infected with a new type of coronavirus. Apparently, this is the last UN member country to deny cases of COVID-19 infection. At the same time, at the end of July, large shopping centers, markets, theaters, parks and service companies were suspended in the Republic. Passenger rail and air services were also suspended in the country. However, officials were required to be at work even on holidays.

In mid-July, the world health organization called on the Republic's authorities to take public safety measures as if the coronavirus was already in the country. At the moment, the population of Turkmenistan is obliged to wear masks and observe a social distance of two meters. Everywhere, including in the markets, there are special markings.

At the same time, there is a shortage of medical masks in the Lebap velayat. They are not available in public and private pharmacies, and local factories have started mass sewing rag masks. "The population wears homemade masks made of gauze or any cotton fabric. Dressmakers even use old children's pants, they change them into masks. They sell such masks at a price from 8 manats to 10. Fabric masks for Resellers cost from 10 to 20 manats, " The Azatlyk correspondent said.

Masks are not enough even for doctors, police officers and officials who are also required to wear them.

Turkmenistan recently received humanitarian assistance from the world health organization. At the request of the Ministry of health of Turkmenistan, protective equipment, including masks for medical personnel, was included in the cargo for the amount of about 500 thousand dollars. Now they are sold to doctors, not given away for free.

Azatlyk's correspondents receive data on outbreaks of pneumonia in all regions of Turkmenistan. In Mary, an unprecedented influx of patients with symptoms of COVID-19. Local hospitals cannot cope with the number of patients, and new quarantine zones are being created.

"The hospital down the street the Oguzkhan (former ulitsa Skvortsova) in Mary redeveloped in infectious diseases. Other hospitals do not accommodate patients. A lot of patients. They only send people there who are not seriously ill. Only nurses and doctors remained to work in this hospital, the rest of the employees had to write a leave application, some were required to indicate a 10-day leave without pay in the application, " Azatlyk's correspondent in Mary reported on August 4.

The number of health workers infected with COVID-19 is growing in the region. In particular, in the sanatorium "Melhem", located in the Mary etrap (district) some doctors were found to have a coronavirus, and they are under quarantine.

In the administrative center of the Lebap velayat, after the introduction of strict quarantine measures, the number of admissions to hospitals has decreased. "Last week, more than 50 people were admitted to a multi-specialty hospital per day. Today, 10 people were admitted, four of them tested positive for covid. This may be due to the fact that the police strictly prevent people from going out on the streets, - said a source in one of the health institutions of the Lebap velayat on August 4. - Cut the number of vehicles by almost half. People can't get to the city from etraps."
